Denbighshire Archives Exhibition

Denbighshire Archives has a small exhibition on the theme of the National Eisteddfod held at Denbigh in 1939, to coincide with the town’s hosting of this year’s event.

Denbighshire has close and important connections with the history and development of the National Eisteddfod from the 15th Century onwards. The county has welcomed the National Eisteddfod on ten occasions in the past, with Denbigh acting as host in 1882, 1939 and 2001.

Denbighshire Archives Service holds a number of records relating to the National Eisteddfodau held in Denbighshire. The current exhibition highlights some items relating to the 1939 Eisteddfod, from the opening ceremony, to problems with ‘Eisteddfod Week Drunks’ which were reported in the Free Press, – antisocial behaviour is not just a modern phenomenon.
