Deputy First Minister announces new business champions to develop Welsh economy

The co-founder of Next, former Chief Executive of HSBC and the Chairman of Cardiff Business Club have been announced as part of the team that will develop a new approach to the Welsh economy.

They will use their considerable business expertise and experience to advise the Welsh Assembly Government and help shape the Economic Renewal Programme.

They will meet and talk to businesses and individuals across Wales to discuss the challenges they face at a number of events throughout the country.

The team will include:

Dyfrig John, former Deputy Chairman and Chief Executive of HSBC Bank. Dyfrig was appointed to the Board of Principality Building Society, as non-executive director in July 2009. He is also a Trustee of the Wales Millennium Centre and a member of the Advisory Board for Bangor Business School.

Liz Davies, one of the original founders of Next plc and subsequently “George at Asda”.  She has also been Buying and Design Director at Mothercare plc and Hobbs Ltd.

And Gerald Davies, current Chairman of Cardiff Business Club and former Chairman of ITV Wales and the Wales Youth Agency.  A respected writer and journalist he represented both Wales and the British and Irish Lions with distinction.

Making the announcement, Mr Jones said,

“Our Ecomomic Renewal Programme is a major look at how Government in Wales helps business and shapes our economy for the future. To achieve real change we need the best people on board to advise us and talk to all parts of Welsh society to help ensure we get it right.

“I am delighted to be able to announce Dyfrig John, Liz Davies and Gerald Davies as part of our team. Between them they bring a wealth of business experience and knowledge to the challenge of re-shaping and preparing our economy for the future.

“I am keen to meet as many businesses and individuals as possible, but I cannot meet them all. As respected individuals in their own right, this new team are well placed to provide me and the Assembly Government with insight and knowledge they gain from their discussions.”

The three will advise on the Economic Renewal Programme and will directly engage with businesses, their representative organisations at a series of roundtable events as part of the ‘Tell Us’ programme.
