Deputy Minister for Social Services welcomes Northern Ireland Minister

The Deputy Minister for Social Services, Gwenda Thomas, has welcomed Robin Newton, Junior Minister in the Northern Ireland Department of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, to Wales.

Mr Newton was in Wales to find out how the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales works in advance of the appointment of an Older People’s Commissioner in Northern Ireland.

As well as meeting Mrs Thomas and Welsh Assembly Government officials, Mr Newton also held meetings with the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, Ruth Marks, and her staff as well as representatives of older people’s organisations.

Gwenda Thomas said:

“We’re very proud in Wales that we were the first country in the world to establish a Commissioner as a voice for older people and I was very happy to share our experience of working with the Older People’s Commissioner with our counterparts in Northern Ireland as they look to emulate our example.

“I hope that Mr Newton has found his visit useful and worthwhile.”
