Display panel feedback chance for Dylan park restoration plans

Views are being sought on restoration proposals for a Swansea park made famous by Dylan Thomas.

Members of the public have until Wednesday May 7 to offer their feedback on plans to upgrade the park to mark the centenary of the famous poet’s birth in 2014.

Dylan Thomas grew up on Cwmdonkin Drive close to the park and the beauty spot featured in his Hunchback in the Park poem.

People can either take a look at http://www.swansea.gov.uk/cwmdonkin or visit display boards in the Civic Centre or Guildhall to see the proposals in person.

Swansea Council has already secured a £19,400 development grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and will submit detailed plans for the park’s restoration under round two of the funding process later this year.

The proposals follow extensive consultation and include the introduction of Dylan Thomas poetry, park interpretation, new seating, a central focal area and water features.

The improvement of the Dylan Thomas shelter, the upgrade of public toilets, more dog waste bins, the resurfacing of footpaths and the restoration of the park’s bowls pavilion are some of the other proposals.

Any comments received about the proposals will help inform the second stage of Swansea Council’s bid for further funds.

Ian Beynon, Swansea Council’s Development and Outreach Manager, said: “A memorial stone to commemorate Dylan Thomas is already in place at Cwmdonkin Park but it would be very apt to upgrade the facilities there to mark a century since his birth.

Dylan Thomas is Swansea’s best known son and his timeless appeal crosses both cultural and geographic boundaries.

“The general public and The Friends of Cwmdonkin Park have been very helpful so far and we’re asking for further feedback as we look to finalise preparations for the second stage of our exciting funding bid.”

Anyone with questions or queries is asked to contact Sian Seabrook at Swansea Council on [email protected] or 01792 635487.
