Dolgellau in dominant mood

Dolgellau were in rampant mood when they brushed aside a stubborn Cowbridge side 53-19 in their first away match of the season.

Cowbridge opened the scoring against a sleepy Dolgellau in the first 40 seconds with an unconverted try by Anna. Within five minutes, Dolgellau’s Elen Evans replied with Captain Lowri Evans adding the extras.

The game was even for the next 15 minutes with both sides battling hard, until eventually Cowbridge came up trumps with another excellent well worked try by Kathryn Criger.

Dolgellau’s response was a good individual try out wide by scrum half Jess Kavanagh, followed by a try underneath the posts by Lowri Evans – the product of good support work receiving an off-load from winger Alaw Davies which gave Dolgellau a 19-10 interval lead.

Unfortunately after the break Cowbridge were forced to change some key players and with Dolgellau losing both props, the game went to uncontested scrums. The superior experience of Dolgellau showed as they constantly exploited Cowbridge’s weaknesses and scored some superb tries by constantly supporting each other.

In total, Elen Evans scored four tries, Jess Kavanagh scored twice and Lowri Evans scored three tries and 4four conversions. Whilst the score-line certainly flattered Dolgellau, they deserved the win and despite the fact that it was the backs which scored the tries, the forwards put up an excellent display with second row Catrin Evans-Thomas being nominated forward player of the game and Jess Kavanagh the pick of the backs.

For Cowbridge, second row Hannah Hughes was the forwards of the match while fly half Anna Jenkins was the pick of the backs.

Dolgellau’s next game is home to Kidwelly on October 25.

Dolgellau is opening its doors for any U15s who wish to learn the game. Several players are offering their coaching skills to any youngsters who wish to play from Dolgellau and the surrounding area with the hope of creating a Meirionnydd U15s team. Likewise, any adults who wish to join are also invited. The seniors train at 7pm on a Friday night.
