With 80% of people in the UK increasing their risk of food poisoning by washing their turkeys before cooking them, Council Environmental Health officers are reminding residents to stay safe this Christmas by taking extra care preparing their Christmas roast.
Christmas more than any other time of year is a time when food plays a vital ingredient to the family celebrations. Often people are cooking for larger numbers than usual so it is more important than ever to reduce the risk of food poisoning.
Follow these turkey tips to keep food safe and tasty:
- If your turkey is frozen, keep it in the freezer until you need it.
- Give it enough time to thaw, the cavity should be ice free.
- Remove giblets as soon as possible.
- If you use stuffing, cook it separately; do not stuff the cavity of the bird.
- Cook your poultry thoroughly for the recommended time. Use a skewer to test if the turkey is ready and prod the thickest part of the bird (usually the thigh). If juices run clear, then it should be cooked.
- Serve your turkey hot, or cool it down quickly in a cool area. Store it in the fridge and use leftovers within 48 hours.
- Reheating cooked meats is not recommended.
