Three new investment schemes from the Welsh Assembly Government and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will allow engineers to complete a feasibility study of drainage issues around the Nant Gwawr Nant y Fedw and Bwllfa Road, Cwmdare.
The Council has been successful in receiving a total of £81,000 – Nant Gwawr (£41k), Nant y Fedw (£10k) and Bwllfa Road (£30K) from the Assembly’s Flood and Coastal Risk Management Branch for the studies to take place.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council recently gave these studies high priority within their three-year capital programme for land drainage improvements by allocating sufficient money to match fund the Welsh Assembly Government Grant. This allows the studies to commence immediately.
These three areas have been prone to flooding and erosion in recent years, and this is a significant step in understanding how and why these floods have occurred.
The study will analyse the three areas of Nant Gwawr, Nant y Fedw and Bwllfa Road, Cwmdare and provide an estimate of the probability of immediate and future flooding within these sites, taking into account the current predictions for climate change.
The study will then look at the feasibility of the various options available for minimising both the immediate and long term flood risks from these watercourses.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning Councillor Andrew Morgan said: “With the support of the Welsh Assembly Government we will now begin a full-scale feasibility study of these three areas which will hopefully bring a long-term solution to the flood-risk problems associated with these areas.
“Once the studies are completed, we can then consider all available options on how best to tackle the flooding issues experienced.
