Drama shows it’s never too late to learn

Anglesey and Gwynedd Councils hope a new drama will inspire adults of all ages to learn new skills.

The neighbouring authorities have teamed up to commission the Shimli theatre venture to create a brand new drama “Never too late”.

The bi-lingual production will be touring around Anglesey and Gwynedd during Adult Learners Week (May 16th-20th). It forms part of a week long festival of adult learning, co-ordinated by NIACE Dysgu Cymru, and backed by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Social Fund.

Set in a local café, “Never too late” follows three people thrown together after an exciting event in their town. The characters, played by Morfudd Hughes, Sion Trystan and Mared Elliw Huws, learn more about each other and find their chance meeting a source of support and inspiration.

Anglesey’s Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator, Bethan Hughes-Jones, explained, “Never too late is not about preaching to people. It’s a light-hearted drama which deals with the various learning opportunities out there for adults, whether they’re 18 or 80 years old. More importantly, it also focuses on the reasons why some people turn their back on learning and how they can overcome their concerns or fears to achieve and make more of their lives.”

Audiences will also have a part to play, sharing their thoughts and experiences about learning in a workshop which follows the performance.

Adult Learners’ Week is a major festival of learning to encourage more people to take a first step back into learning. The week also represents a celebration of the growing number of adults in Wales who have enriched their lives and improved their prospects through education and training.

Shimli’s production of “Never too late” will appear at the following venues:

• Tuesday, May 17th 10.00am, Amlwch Memorial Hall
• Tuesday, May 17th 2.00pm, Neuadd Goronwy Owen, Benllech

• Thursday, May 19th 7.00pm, Rhos y Gad Chapel Vestry, Llanfairpwll
• Friday, May 20th 10.00am, Ucheldre Centre, Holyhead.

The Shimli theatre venture was established by Siwan Llynor and Mared Elliw Huws. The pair scripted “Never too late” and Siwan also directs the production.
