Driver Fined for Smoking

WrexhamPrivate Hire Drivers in Wrexham are being warned to stop lighting up in their vehicles or face a fine.

Despite the smoking ban being in force for over two and a half years Private Hire Drivers continue to light up in their vehicles.  It is illegal to smoke in any place of work – mainly pubs, clubs and restaurants, but also including taxis, private hire vehicles and lorry cabs.

Only recently a driver was issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice and paid a £30 fine for driving his vehicle whilst smoking a cigarette.  Drivers must realise that they are driving vehicles that members of the public use and cannot at any time smoke in them, even if they are not working.

Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer said:

“Enforcement of the smoking ban will continue and similar action will be taken against drivers who flout the law. Driver’s must remember that this law is in place to protect the health of the public and we are committed to ensuring that standards are complied with”
