Dummy moped leads to arrests

NW PolicePolice targeting suspected scooter thieves used a dummy moped in an operation to crack down on vehicle crime.

Following the success of an earlier initiative in the East Conwy District in September, North Wales Police recently arrested four more youths in a further operation to deal with the problem.

A number of arrests were made in September and stolen property recovered across Abergele and Colwyn Bay in a co-ordinated programme a which involved a media awareness campaign, identifying vulnerable vehicles and increased patrols in local hot spots.

Now, in the continuing effort to combat vehicle crime, North Wales Police deployed a “dummy moped” in a bid to catch offenders.

As a result four male youths from Colwyn Bay were arrested on suspicion of unauthorised taking of a police moped, which has been recovered.

A 17 year old youth has been charged and is due to appear at Llandudno Youth Court in January.

Meanwhile North Wales Police are encouraging people to:

  • lock car doors, windows and sunroof when leaving the vehicle
  • remove the stereo, if possible, and Sat Nav including support and suction pads and to wipe away suction marks on the windscreen or dashboard
  • tuck in wing mirrors and put the aerial down
  • keep car keys out of sight, even at home
  • report any suspicious behaviour to the police or Crimestoppers and not to:
  • leave anything on display
  • keep vehicle documents in the car
