Eco-loo is Flushed with Success

The new sustainable toilet facility at Roath Park Lake was officially opened to the public last week by Cllr Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture.

The new provision promotes sustainable construction and meets high environmental standards.

The structure is unique as it is made from 80% recycled wood and backfilled with concrete to provide an extremely strong and energy efficient alternative to the usual building materials like brick and breeze blocks.

It boasts several environmental and sustainable benefits such as being made from low cost material which doesn’t need replacement or maintenance. The blocks were also quick to build, using little energy.

The structure has high thermal properties making it warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

During the planning process, careful consideration was given to the sustainability of the re-build and the project contributes to Roath Park’s submission to the national Green Flag Award.

The new toilet block is situated on Lake Road West, adjacent to the rose garden. It replaces the old toilet block which was knocked down in March 2010.

Cllr Howells was joined by the project architect Gavin Traylor.  Cllr Howells said: “The rebuild of the new toilet block has been a unique project and is the first of its kind to be built by the council.

“It is an example of our commitment to sustainability. It is built of recycled materials and boasts modern, energy saving features such as lighting and water timers.

Roath Park attracts over 2.1 million people each year and it is important that these visitors have access to clean and modern facilities”.
