Egg-chasing Easter training for Caerphilly youngsters

Young people from a Caerphilly County Borough community have been brushing up on their rugby skills, after taking part in a fun tournament during the Easter holidays.

The Upper Rhymney Valley Six Nations tournament, which was held at Rhymney Comprehensive School, provided an activity to offer young people the chance to occupy their leisure time in a positive way.

The day was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council Youth Service’s The Hub team, together with the Sport Caerphilly and Rugby Development teams.

Young people aged between 11 and 15 from Rhymney, Deri, Fochriw, Abertysswg and Pontlottyn took part in the day, which involved a skills session in the morning before getting down to the serious business of the tournament itself in the afternoon.

Councillor Phil Bevan, cabinet member for education and leisure said: “Initiatives such as this are excellent in that they provide a fun, positive activity for local young people to take part in over the Easter holidays. As well as this, they also help to develop important skills such as discipline and teamwork, which will no doubt be beneficial to the young people as they progress into their adult lives.”

Newport Gwent Dragons star Danny Lee also came along to support the event and presented the medals to participants.

The winning team got special treat, the chance to watch the Newport Gwent Dragons as they took on Edinburgh at Rodney Parade last Sunday.

Neil Roberts, 5 x 60 officer for the area said: “‘It was fantastic to see so many young people from different areas joining together for an action packed day of sport. The standard of play was also very high. The feedback we had from the participants was great, and the aim is to link with The Hub team far more in future, and run similar events for young people.”

One young person who took part said: “It was really good taking part in the tournament and I really enjoyed meeting Danny Lee too. I think it’s great that activities like this are organised for us to take part in during the holidays, because otherwise we would just be hanging around with nothing to do.”

The tournament was funded by local Communities First Partnerships from Deri, Fochriw, Abertysswg and Pontlottyn.
