Elderly in Wrexham asked to Keep Safe and Stay in Touch

The recent severe weather in parts of the UK has claimed the lives of 4 elderly people who have frozen to death after the falls in their icy gardens. With more freezing conditions forecast, Wrexham Council are urging vulnerable people to make full use of Wrexham’s Telecare Service in a bid to ensure a tragedy like this doesn’t happen here.

All Telecare service users will be receiving a seasonal greeting card with the important message to “KEEP SAFE, STAY IN TOUCH” and a reminder for them wear their pendant so its there when they need it.

Vulnerable people who use the service have a Lifeline Alarm Unit in their home and a pendent they can press to call for help in emergency. Many people also have other sensors, such as smoke detectors, heat extremes sensors and inactivity monitors that will automatically send a call through to the Telecare monitoring centre ensuring an appropriate response is organised.

Kay Board, Telecare Project Manager for Wrexham Council stressed the importance of the message. “Wearing the pendant is vital and we want to remind people of this. We had a case recently where a lady fell in her garden, pressed the pendent she was wearing, and got the help she needed promptly. If the lady had been on the ground outside for any length of time, especially in these winter temperatures, it could have been fatal and having the pendant at hand really is a life saver.”
