Encouraging youngsters to get reading

Dozens of children will be taking part in a campaign organised by Gwynedd’s School Libraries Service to encourage more children to enjoy reading.

Eight to 11 year-olds from 35 schools across the county will be taking part in the lively Hei Hogia Bach book show during January.

The aim of the show is to inspire children – boys in particular – to read more English and Welsh books by giving them the opportunity to hear 40-minute fun performances of exerts of novels, read out by actors.

Among the books used in this year’s Hei Hogiau tour are The Twits by Roald Dahl, Dial y Polter-Wydd by Michael Lawrence and Do Igloos have Loos? by Mitchell Symons. A pack of eight books to accompany the show will be purchased by the Schools Library Service for each school which takes part.

The actors taking part this year are Dyfrig Evans, Darren Stokes and Catherine Aran.

Nia Gruffydd, Gwynedd Council’s Libraries Service’s User Service Manager, said:

“The Hei Hogia show always gets a great reception at the schools and it’s wonderful to hear the children asking the teachers if they can read the books straight after the show.

“It’s certain that being given the chance to hear parts of the books read out loud and performed brings them alive. I’m sure that this simple idea is a highly effective way of encouraging more children to read and enjoy books, and we are delighted to be able to hold this sort of event.”
