Epic, homemade, narrative and other filmic metaphor @ Buffalo

Interesting things are afoot at Cardiff’s Buffalo bar (nice burgers last time I went) on November 4, with a quarter of intriguing acts.

Welsh trio Stop Motion Men are playing acoustically and strive to create a widescreen, cinematic sound, which is well served in this video for It’s All Gonna Catch Up With You. They’ve been in the studio and this date serves as a launch for their EP What Now?

Anyone who’s been here before probably knows we like Little Eris, Cardiff’s finest lo-fi, beats and meander and whimsy and wonder electro-punk machine. (She’s not a machine of course, she’s a person and a very nice one too). Here, for your delectation and indeed your delight is Energy, Bronwen Davies’ first Little Eris recording.

Next up, which, we believe makes them first support, is Ute. Sadly, Ute need to change their name to make finding youtube videos easier as Welsh Icons is on a timetable baby and has a limited tolerance for far Eastern vids labelled ‘cute’… Mmm, sorry about that. Ute are however, available fully on Myspace, so take a listen to their songs, which attempt to push folk and the traditional trio as far as they can – how about to a rugby team, that’s a long push, even Davey Graham wouldn’t have taken on Gloucester at Kingsholm in his prime.

Top of this little league of no small merit is My Sad Captains who, clearly and uniquely named as they are, are a piece of shiny plaster to find on You Tube. They’re a little bit Pavementy, jangly indie, lovely tunes, super harmonies that kind of thing, with the added bonus of a very pretty woman on keyboards (Welsh Icons is a red blooded male after all) – I’m willing to bet they all have degrees, but I go into Ladbrokes and they look at me funny, so there you go. Here, in the meantime, is the all of the above, All Hat And No Plans.

You too can look at all these people in the flesh while they play music, mostly standing up, but with some sitting and with no related video links nor buffering wait at Buffalo Bar, Windsor Place, Cardiff on November 4 – Bonfire Night Eve if you will. Real life, you know it makes sense.
