European team key to project delivery

Anglesey’s Spatial European Team (SETs) is offering free advice and guidance to local communities, voluntary groups and businesses about various funding opportunities available.

The Island provides a base for one of the four regional Spatial European Teams (SETs), set up across Wales, to help maximise the use of the European Funding.

Their work is vital as Anglesey will only receive the highest level of European Union funding support – through the West Wales and the Valleys Convergence Programme – until 2013.
The EU Convergence Programme comprises of two funds:

  • European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) which focuses on building this knowledge based economy, improve business competitiveness and develop strategic infrastructure for a modern business environment.
  • The European Social Fund (ESF) will focus on tackling economic inactivity, improve employment opportunities and increase training available for the people of Anglesey.
  • Operational programmes are in place which outlines priorities for these expenditures; these priorities are based on the social and economic needs of the region.

The combined programme for West Wales and the Valleys, together with match funding will see a total investment of £3.5 billion.

This investment will focus on regenerating deprived communities by giving people greater opportunities to create new businesses, increase employment and improve quality of life.

Anglesey’s Head of Economic Development, Sasha Wynn Davies, explained, “The European Union Convergence Programme provides us with an excellent opportunity to move forward with social and economic regeneration projects here on Anglesey.

“The team will soon be holding a number of events to raise awareness about European funding and how it can provide opportunities to improve local communities.”

The Spatial European Team (SETs) on Anglesey is committed to sharing information about the latest developments and opportunities available. Team members are on hand to help projects to find suitable funding opportunities, direct groups to sources of useful information and help secure funding for local ideas which could succeed in the wake of larger projects.

Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Bryan Owen, added, “Our Spatial European Team will play a key role in the delivery of European funds on the Island. The team will serve as a first point of contact for anyone wishing to access this important funding and can also help with the tendering process and project delivery.”

The team will be distributing tendering information regularly. If you’d like updates or information on any aspect of European Funding, please forward your contact details to the Spatial European Team via email: [email protected]
