Event helps tackle elder abuse

Concerns about elder abuse in the community were put under the spotlight at a special multi agency information event held in Caerphilly recently.

Caerphily county borough council’s Protection of Vulnerable Adults Team organised the event at Twyn Community Centre to coincide with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

A range of agencies attended including Social Services, Gwent Police, Disablity CANDO Advocacy, Age Concern Advocacy, Epilepsy Wales, Adult Services Duty Information Team and the Safer Caerphilly Multi Agency Centre. Representatives from each agency were on hand to give advice in a friendly and informal setting.

The event was well attended and lots of information and advice was provided to local residents. In addition, the team also held a charity cake sale, raffle and quiz to raise £280.00 for the charity Action on Elder Abuse.

World Elder Abuse Day is an event which is co-ordinated across the UK by the charity Action on Elder Abuse. This was the third annual event that the CCBC Protection of Vulnerable Adults team have held to raise awareness on how to report abuse and seek support for members of the community who are vulnerable and less able to defend themselves against abuse.

If you suspect that a vulnerable adult is being subjected to any form of abuse please contact the council’s Adult Services Duty Information Team on 0808 100 2500.
