Exhibition tells the story of Welsh emigration

CefynThere is a special opportunity to see a new exhibition by renowned artist, Cefyn Burgess at the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery in Bangor.

The exhibition, “Migration” can be seen at the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery until 9 January 2010. It’s a unique opportunity to see new textile works on the theme of the Welsh diasporas.

Since qualifying from the Royal College of Art in 1985, Cefyn Burgess has been recognised a leading textile artists. This exhibition is the culmination of a project that began when he was awarded a mid career grant by the Arts Council Wales in 2006.

Cefyn used it to embark on a study of the emigration of the Welsh from their homeland to cities such as Liverpool and across the Atlantic to north-eastern United States. The resulting works chart their journey and record cultural elements the migrants took with them to their new homes.

Cefyn Burgess explained: “The domestic textiles, home art if you like, features strongly in the work. The Welsh kept Wales behind closed doors, at home and at chapel. I have tried through the use of textiles to convey that story, the journey many Welsh people have made.”

The Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery, Ffordd Gwynedd, Bangor is open from Tuesday to Friday from 12.30pm to 4.30pm and on Saturday from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Admission is free.
