Newport County rescued a point in the first Welsh derby of the season, striking a minute from time against Wrexham at Spytty Park.
In a rain-soaked encounter, Wrexham thought they had stolen the three points with a deflected goal from Andy Morrell after 23 minutes. Morrell’s strike was bound for the safety of Glyn Thompson’s gloves before a huge deflection turned the ball into the corner of the net.
The visitor’s were to reduced to ten men when Neil Ashton hauled down Charlie Henry when through on goal. But Craig Reid – who also missed a chance from eight-yards out in the first half – failed again as he slipped and chipped his spot kick against the bar.
County were dominating with the man advantage but couldn’t find an equaliser and Wrexham nearly killed the game off before the Exiles rescued a point in the 89th minute.
A chipped ball into the penalty area was only half dealt with and a chance fell for Darryl Knight to slide into the net from close range: County’s unbeaten home record remains.
