The Families First Dietetic Team has successfully completed and passed the Children and Young People’s Participation Standards for Wales assessment, gaining them a prestigious kite mark.

The standards are based on the core principles of participation and are approved by young people. The seven standards are related to: Information, It’s Your Choice, No Discrimination, Respect, You get something out of it, Feedback and Improving how we work.

The Cardiff Young Inspectors (CYI) Team interviewed staff to decide whether all seven national standards were being met. The CYI Team is made up of young ambassadors, and their lead highlighted the great work the Public Health Dietetic Team in Cardiff and Vale UHB were involved in and were really impressed with the projects they saw.

Projects showcased included Food and Play after school clubs, work with Special Educational Needs Schools and units, MEND, Level 1 Agored Cymru courses run and supported as part of the NUTRITION SKILLS FOR LIFETM package working with Community First partners, the YMCA, Barnardo’s, Youth Services and Primary and Secondary Schools across Cardiff, and the work done with after school clubs supporting them to gain a Gold Standard Healthy Snack Award.

Alexandria Gunn, Families First Lead and Public Health Dietician said: “The team is really looking forward to the assessment report being published and working more with the Young Ambassadors team in the future. We can’t wait to display our kite mark for everyone to see, we feel so proud.

“I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the process and the hard work that has been put into this project.”

“The team is really looking forward to their future partnership work with the Young Ambassadors.”

Judyth Jenkins, Head of Nutrition and Dietetics at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “It’s fantastic news that the work of the Public Health Nutrition and Dietetics team has been recognised with a kite mark award for the quality of their work. Working in partnership with Children and Young People is essential to maximize their future Health and Well being.”
