Famililes link up to tackle coastal marathon

Families taking part in an unique health improvement scheme are taking on their biggest challenge yet.

The families, who are involved in the Family Challenge project, will be tackling the Pembrokeshire Coast Path this summer.

Under the Coastal Path Challenge different families aim to walk a section of the path so that its whole 186-mile length is covered by the end of the summer holidays.

“We’re very lucky in Pembrokeshire in that we have this great resource – the coast path – on our doorstep” said Councillor Sian James, Cabinet member for Health and Well-being.

“Walking is one of the best exercises there is and what better way to keep fit during the school holidays than to get out into the fresh air and walk.”

The coast path has been divided up into different sections from one to six miles including family walks, pushchair friendly and more demanding treks so there is something for everyone.

Some families are only taking part in one walk while others are joining in every day.

The first leg of the challenge from Amroth to Tenby took part on Saturday, April 3. Nine families joined in during the day, which ended with a barbeque on the beach.

“It was great to get out of the house and do something different with the whole family,” said one family member. “It was great fun.”

Pembrokeshire Family Challenge is open to all families in Pembrokeshire who have at least one child under 12.

Managed by Health Challenge Pembrokeshire – a partnership of organisations responsible for health and well-being in Pembrokeshire – it is funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Way of Life initiative.
