An innovative traffic calming solution has been introduced on a busy roundabout along Carmarthen Road near Cwmbwrla which has seen numerous vehicle collisions and near misses in the last three years.
The downhill approach and wide open aspect of the approach to the roundabout can mean that speeds are high and motorists are looking right prematurely and not concentrating on the vehicles ahead.
A series of fence panels have been erected along the central reservation which direct the attention of motorists to where it is required.
The screens mean motorists are encouraged to slow at the give way line of the roundabout, assess traffic flows and move off when safe.
It’s intended that this measure will reduce the amount of collisions and also make it easier for motorists to exit from Pentregethin Road and Approach Road.
Chris Vinestock, Head of Transport in Swansea Council, said: “Collisions have previously occurred at the site because motorists were looking right instead of looking in front of them. The fencing forces motorists to focus on the car in front so that if any sudden braking occurs they will be able to act more quickly.”
Further measures at the site will include new road markings around the roundabout.
