Festival was a giant success says council

The first event of Newport Festival 2010 started in style on Saturday with more than 500 youngsters taking part and hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the March of the Giants parade.

School children helped to bring to life Welsh characters of myth and legend and worked alongside Malarky arts to create the 15ft high gods, giants and dragons for the city centre parade.

The parade was led by thundering samba drummers and youngsters were dressed as druids, birds and flowers.

The schools taking part were Gaer Juniors, Eveswell Primary, Fairoak Nursery, Millbrook Primary, St Woolos Primary, St Andrews Primary and Ysgol Ifor Hael.

Following the parade there was a special performance from the samba drummers and Paddy the Clown and George Orange entertained the crowd.
