Five for one for history hunters

Five treasure troves of information have combined to make fact-finding easier than ever for history hunters in Wales.

Archives Wales is introducing a system where one ticket will give people access to the archive services of West Glamorgan, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Powys and Swansea University.

The special reader ticket is valid for five years and also gives access to the archives service of Ceredigion and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales in Aberystwyth.

History hunters can get hold of the reader ticket at any of the participating venues.

Swansea Council is one of the bodies backing the move.

Kim Collis, West Glamorgan County Archivist based at Swansea’s Civic Centre, said: “The new reader’s ticket is designed to make it as easy as possible for family and local historians in Wales to visit their local archives office and to travel further afield to visit neighbouring offices.

“The documents in our archives to which this ticket gives access range in date from the Middle Ages to the present day and encompass the historic records of churches, chapels, businesses, landed estates and local authorities.

“We hope this pilot scheme will eventually extend further to more Welsh public archives.”
