Flintshire Sounds returns

Flintshire Sounds is a fun and therapeutic weekly music session for older people with memory problems or dementia in Flintshire, their families, carers and friends.

The sessions are organised by Flintshire County Council’s Social Services for Adults and musical input provided by a musician from the Guitar School in Mancot.

The sessions aim to provide a welcoming atmosphere where people can enjoy the music that they like, reminisce about the past and meet other people in similar situations.

Becoming forgetful can be a bewildering experience for the person and their family. Music has always been recognised as a way to overcome some of the challenges of the condition, and bring people together.

Reminiscence through music can be used to engage people with memory problems / dementia, promoting relaxation and enjoyment. Much can be gained from Flintshire Sounds if both the person with dementia and their families / carers attend as reminiscence can often strengthen the connection between them by sharing past experiences.

Councillor Carol Ellis, Executive Member for Social Services said : “This is a valuable service that makes a big difference to people’s lives.”

Malcolm Scott, and his wife, Margaret, who was diagnosed with Alzheimers three years ago, have been going to Flintshire Sounds in Holywell since the beginning of the year.

Malcolm said:

“It’s a real highlight of the week, coming to Flintshire Sounds, and of course, there’s scientific proof that music benefits people with Alzheimers. Sara Davies, the coordinator, plays songs from the musicals and she brings a photo to explain which musical the songs are from, and that really helps.

“And it’s not just about the music and the dancing; the tea break also encourages social chat and a chance to reminisce about old times. Making new friends and sharing past experiences is an enjoyable, and important, part of the session.”

Margaret said:

“I always look forward to coming. I love the dancing too.”

Flintshire Sounds will be held in Buckley on a Wednesday morning from 1 December 2010 and in Holywell on a Thursday morning from 2 December 2010.
