Flying a Flag for Armed Forces Day

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff will attend an event to honour servicemen and women past, present and future at Cardiff Castle next week.

To herald the start of Armed Forces Week, the special flag-raising ceremony will take place on Monday, June 20 (10.30am) ahead of Cardiff’s main Armed Forces Day event at Cooper’s Field, Bute Park on Saturday, June 25.

Cllr Prof Delme Bowen will be joined by veterans, cadets and members of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force for a short ceremony to commemorate those who serve and have served in the Forces, before the event culminates with the raising of the Armed Forces Day flag on the corner bastion of the Castle wall by representatives of the Lord Mayor’s Own Scouts and Guides.

The flag-raising event is one of hundreds taking place throughout the UK the same day, in the build-up to Armed Forces Day itself, on Saturday 25 June.

Last year, Cardiff hosted the UK Armed Forces Day national event when around 80,000 people enjoyed a glorious day in the city, supporting the nation’s Armed Forces. This year’s UK event is being held in Edinburgh while here in Cardiff, people will again have the opportunity to show their support at their own local event in Coopers Field, Bute Park.

The Lord Mayor will also attend the Bute Park event and give a reading in Welsh as part of the Drum Head Service (12.30pm)

The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Prof. Delme Bowen, said: “It will be a great privilege to be part of this event which marks the beginning of Armed Forces Week. It is so important that we honour our veterans and brave servicemen and women and recognise the sacrifices they make.

“I’m also very much looking forward to Saturday’s Armed Forces Day and the special event at Cooper’s Field where I hope the people of Cardiff will again turn out in large numbers to show their support for our armed forces and help celebrate the contribution they make to our country.”

There are a number of events taking place in Cardiff during the week leading up to Armed Forces Day, full details of these and the Armed Forces Day event itself can be found by visiting www.armedforcesdaywales.co.uk
