There were goals galore on Friday 13th June as primary school children from across Caerphilly county borough celebrated the beginning of the Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

To celebrate the World Cup kicking off, primary school children were invited to adopt the colours of one of the countries taking part in the real tournament and attend the new “world class” Caerphilly County Borough Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.

Over 30 schools got to experience the new first class, international standard 3G pitches at the new facility. Italy were the reining champions, represented by Blackwood Primary School. Even their teachers embraced the theme, dressing up as the famous Italian gaming characters Mario and Luigi!

Cllr Dave Poole, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services, commented, “It is fantastic that so many of our school children took part in this tournament. It is so important that sport is made to be fun so that children can become hooked on it for life. Perhaps we had some future World Cup players taking part in the tournament?! With the new Centre for Sporting Excellence we can nurture these talented youngsters and encourage elite sport in the county borough and the wider region.”

Children at the tournament were also able to have their photo taken with the UEFA Super Cup. The Football Association of Wales (FAW) brought the cup along to the event to encourage excitement about the upcoming match between Real Madrid CF and Sevilla FC due to take place in Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday 12 August. Tickets for this once-in-a lifetime game are available to buy at www.uefa.com/uefasupercup.
