Former Pobol y Cwm star Shelley Rees-Owen has been chosen by Plaid Cymru to stand in the Pentre ward in Rhondda at next year’s council elections.
Shelley, whose stage name is Shelley Rees, played Stacey Jones in the Welsh language soap opera for 10 years before her character emigrated to New Zealand.
Two years ago she was BAFTA nominated for her role in another Welsh language drama 2 Dŷ a Ni (Two Houses and Us), a drama series on S4C which was set in Pontypridd.
Shelley, who last appeared in the series Alys on S4c, also does voiceover on commercials, radio plays, theatre and other television work.
Shelley, who is married with a daughter, was selected alongside Maureen Weaver to stand for Plaid in Pentre ward, which includes Pentre and Ton Pentre.
She said: “I have lived in Ton Pentre the majority of my life and I am aware of local and wider issues affecting people. I would like the opportunity to represent people in raising and resolving concerns and grievances.”
“I want to make a positive difference to the community and if elected, I will work hard to serve the people of Ton and Pentre to the best of my ability.
“Part of the reason I decided to put my name forward as a candidate was that I’ve been incredibly inspired by Sêra Evans-Fear (Treorci Plaid councillor). I admire her integrity and passion for her community and I’d love to be able to emulate what she does for her constituents.”
