Former coxswain of St David’s RNLI lifeboat Malcolm Gray MBE has been appointed as one of the station’s new deputy launching authorities (DLA).
This position involves authorising the launch of the station’s lifeboats when requested by coastguards.
Malcolm commenced his service in 1965 before leaving in 1966 to join the Merchant Navy.
In 1971 he re-joined the RNLI at St David’s, serving as a crew member when in 1986 he was appointed 2nd coxswain. In 1994 he was appointed to the post of coxswain until he stood down in 2006, on reaching the retirement age for crewmembers.
Over the years he was recognised by the RNLI for many rescues which took skill, determination and courage. In the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in January 2005 his services to the RNLI were recognised, by him being awarded the MBE.
Since 2006 he has been involved in the launching and recovery of the lifeboats. His knowledge and experience will be a great asset to the station.
