François-Xavier Roth conjures up the heat of spain in may concerts

BBC National Orchestra of Wales present two concerts in May that bring the heat of the Spanish summer to two of Wales’s best-loved concert halls.

The concert features Debussy’s Images, a three-part work that explores the dances and folk songs of England and France, and the swirling heat and vibrancy of Iberia. In the central movement, Debussy brings the exciting festivities of a Spanish festival to life, through very extroverted, rhythmical music.

Performing at St David’s Hall, Cardiff on Friday 25 May, and Swansea’s Brangwyn Hall on Saturday 26 May, the Orchestra will be led for this programme by their Associate Guest Conductor François-Xavier Roth.

For both concerts, the Orchestra is joined by violinist Daniel Hope, who will perform Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No 1. Renowned for his virtuosity and creativity, Daniel Hope has toured the world, performing with major orchestras. In these concerts he explores one of Shostakovich’s most personal works – composed at the height of musical censorship in the Soviet Union, it’s a dark and intensely passionate concerto.

The concerts in Cardiff and Swansea open with different works – in Cardiff, the Orchestra explores Philippe Manoury’s Sound and Fury, and in Swansea, they kick off with John Adams’s punchy and exciting Lollapalooza.
