Free activities for Adult Learners’ Week

Coleg Gwent is getting set for a range of taster sessions, events, open days and workshops taking place between 12 and 20 May 2012 for Adult Learners’ Week, a UK-wide initiative to celebrate the benefits of learning.

Throughout Wales, ‘Learning Festivals’ have been planned for communities by local learning providers to highlight the wealth of learning, skills and hobbies available to people right on their doorstep. The festivals are sponsored by NIACE Dysgu Cymru, the body charged by the Welsh Government to promote adult learning.

Activities include art and craft taster courses, ideas to improve your gardening and horticultural skills, IT courses, language courses and many more.  With ideas for all the family, the events will give people a flavour of the sorts of courses which are available in their local area.

Coleg Gwent’s Monmouth Learn-IT Centre, in partnership with other providers from the Monmouthshire Learning Festival Group, will be offering free taster activities including historical talks & walks, art & crafts and CV writing & job skills help on Saturday 12 May at the Shire Hall in Monmouth from 10am-2pm, whilst the Cwmbran Learn-IT Centre will be hosting their own similar event on Saturday 19 May from 10am-2pm.

Nathan Pearce, Manager of Coleg Gwent’s Learn-IT Centres in Monmouth and Cwmbran says:

“The week’s aim is to give people a flavour of the types of learning they can experience in the county, not just for Adult Learners’ Week, but for the medium and long-term future too.   Once people get a taste of what is on offer they feel empowered to find out more and many go on to learn new skills that they can put to good use.”

Adult Learners’ Week is recognised as the UK’s largest festival of learning, and, in Wales, has become a real driver for people to get together and try their hands at a new skill or learning opportunity. The benefits of lifelong learning are well-documented; increased self-confidence, and improved long term health are among the benefits experienced by individuals who extend their learning journeys beyond their formal education.

Whatever your interests or aspirations, there will be a course to satisfy your needs and to help you to start your learning journey.

Coleg Gwent will be holding information evenings at its five Campuses in Ebbw Vale, Crosskeys, Newport, Pontypool and Usk on Tuesday 15 May from 5pm-8pm.
