Free family fun day to celebrate centre facelift

Residents in New Tredegar will soon benefit from a newly improved leisure and community facility thanks to a combined funding package of over £350,000.

New Tredegar Leisure Centre has been transformed from an outdated sports hall into a modern and versatile venue for the entire community and the doors will officially open next week.

Thanks to the combined efforts of local community groups and Caerphilly County Borough Council, the centre has been converted into a fit-for-purpose facility for young people and for leisure activities.

A free family activity day is being organised to celebrate the opening of New Tredegar Lifestyle Centre on Thursday 3rd June between 11am and 4pm. Activities will include dodgeball, 5 a side football, mini tennis, badminton, tag rugby and cricket. Other attractions include art and craft activities, IT sessions and health workshops.

Cllr Phil Bevan, CCBC cabinet member for education and leisure said, “We are delighted that the centre has been given a new lease of life and look forward to opening the doors of this exciting new community facility. I would urge everyone to come along to the open day and find out what’s on offer for people of all ages.”

The first floor of the centre will become a dedicated youth and community area, while the ground floor will provide a modern fitness suite and improved changing rooms.

Work has been made possible with a grant of £150,000 from the Heads of the Valleys Programme combined with funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Fit For Purpose and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Disability Equality Group.

The Heads of the Valleys Programme is a 15 year regeneration project, led by the Welsh Assembly Government, working to benefit communities in Torfaen, Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Aimed at stimulating regeneration, economic growth, and environmental improvement, the £140 million programme is making the Heads of the Valleys an increasingly successful and attractive area for people to live and work.

Jocelyn Davies, Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, said, “Through our regeneration plans we are committed to helping to improve communities across the Heads of the Valleys area. This project is an excellent example of how the Heads of the Valleys Programme can make a genuine difference to community groups at grass roots level. These facilities prove to be so much more than just bricks and mortar, they are a focal point of local communities and help people of all ages to get involved in activities, make new friends and build healthier, happier lives.”

Cllr Phil Bevan added, “This new development follows in the footsteps of the recent introduction of a similar joint-use facility at Aberbargoed. The Hangar Youth and Community Centre is proving to be extremely successful and is being well used by the local community, and I am confident that the facility at New Tredegar will be just as well received.”
