Free film tells story of Welsh Morecambe and Wise

They were compared to Morecambe and Wise and now an award-winning film about a Welsh comedy duo is being screened in Swansea during the forthcoming St David’s Week celebrations.

Ryan a Ronnie tells the story of Ryan Davies and Ronnie Williams – a double act who emerged on Welsh language TV in the late 1960s before appearing on BBC One across the UK between 1971 and 1973.

Meic Povey’s film won a BAFTA Cymru award and a screening will be taking place at the Brangwyn Hall on Wednesday March 2.

The production goes backstage to explore the forces that kept the hard-working Ryan and Ronnie together for seven spectacular years but eventually drove them apart.

It also highlights their separate ideas and the tensions between them that led to their split at Caerphilly’s Double Diamond Club in 1974.

The free Welsh Language screenings with English subtitles start at 1pm and 7pm.

Tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/brangwynhall or for collection from Swansea Tourist Information Centre.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said: “Ryan and Ronnie were immensely popular comedians of their time who helped to put Wales on the map.

“These film screenings are among the many events that mean Swansea is very much at the forefront of celebrating our patron saint.”
