Free swim initiative for children extended to weekends

Council-run swimming pools are to throw open their doors to free swims for children every weekend after the summer holidays.

The holiday free swim initiative kicks in when the children break up for summer holidays next month.

But the free fun will go on every weekend starting in September under a fresh initiative announced by the Welsh Assembly Government.

Cllr Graham Thomas, Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, at Swansea Council, welcomed the move and said children are taking up the holiday free swims at a rate of more than 20,000 a year.

He said: “Hundreds of young people aged 16 and under attended free swimming sessions over half-term and we’re expecting it to be really popular over the summer as parents look for ways of entertaining their children during the holidays without having to splash out.

“This latest initiative to extend the scheme to free swims at weekends as well is very welcome.”

The initiative announced by the Welsh Assembly Government will apply to Council-run swimming pools.

Christine George, Swansea Council’s Swimming Development Officer, said: “By providing free swimming it’s hoped that youngsters will come and enjoy the water, practice their stroke and keep fit.

“Being able to swim opens the doors to many other aquatic sports.”

The over 60s swim initiative which operates at Council pools and the Wales National Pool is not affected.
