Children can learn to swim for free or enjoy free indoor activities in Rhondda Cynon Taf’s leisure centres during this week’s Whitsun half-term holidays. Youngsters aged 16 and under and their families can enjoy a packed programme of free leisure activities from Tuesday, June 1 until Friday, June 4, 2010.
Activities including football, swimming, table tennis and badminton are offered through the Council’s High 5 leisure scheme. Now in its fifth year, High 5 was launched to provide children and young people with safe and healthy activities during the school holidays.
Highlights of the week include:
- Scuba diving, snorkelling, table tennis, badminton, hockey, cricket, rounders, try golf, touch rugby and 5v5 at Abercynon Sports Centre.
- Snorkelling, diving, snooker, water polo, disability swimming and mini polo at Aberdare Pool.
- Free swimming and morning swimming lessons at Bronwydd Pool, Porth.
- Squash, badminton and free use of Zenith Kids gym for existing members at Hawthorn Leisure Centre during certain hours.
- Family snorkelling and family sub aqua sessions at Hawthorn Swimming Pool.
- Junior learn to swim for beginners, swimming stroke development and aqua fit at Llantrisant Leisure Centre. Badminton, squash, table tennis and Zenith gym (Over 14’s only).
- Free use of indoor facilities at Llantwit Fardre Leisure Centre, Church Village, for squash and badminton.
- Racquet sports including badminton at Michael Sobell Sports Centre, Aberdare.
- Diving, rookies lifeguards, water polo and snorkelling at Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad, as well as junior football and squash.
- Swimming at Rhondda Fach Sports Centre, Tylorstown.
- Free junior swimming, learn to swim and badminton (subject to availability) at Tonyrefail Leisure Centre.
Youngsters can swim for free between 11am and 4.30pm during the holidays from June 1-4 at all swimming pools within RCT. Up to two adults and three children can swim for free as a family group between 11am and 5.30pm. All pools will offer free swimming lessons.
Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, said:
“We will be offering a range of free, fun activities for children to enjoy at Whitsun – whatever the weather. I encourage children and their families to visit their local leisure centre to see what’s on offer.”
