Take a trip to your library during travel week

Get in the mood for summer holidays next week – by visiting your local library. To promote the range of travel books and DVDs available for loan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries Service is holding a week of travel-related activities during its ‘Where in the World Week’, starting Monday, June 7, 2010.

Libraries staff will set sail in a humorous sketch show, the ‘Where in the World Cruise’, at Ton Pentre Library on Monday, June 7 at 7pm. Also at Ton Pentre Library, there is a craft session and talk by Melissa Warren on Thursday, June 10 at 9.30am.

Children can journey to the Wild West at a cowboy fancy dress party at Maerdy Library on Friday, June 11. All week at Tonyrefail Library there will be a ‘Find the leprechaun’ treasure hunt.

In the Cynon area, there will be an Operation Zulu presentation by Valleys Kids at Aberdare Library on Thursday, June 10 at 1pm, with African dance, food taster and hair demonstration by Florence Jones at 2pm. On Thursday, June 10 at Hirwaun Library from 7pm, Dr. Kim Polistina will give a talk about travels around Australia.

In the Taff area, drop in for a ‘Holidays’ coffee morning at Cilfynydd Library on Tuesday, June 8 at 11am and a multi-cultural cooking demo at Rhydyfelin Library on the morning of Wednesday, June 9. Find out where in the world your ancestors came from at a family history taster at Rhydyfelin Library on the morning of Tuesday, June 8.

Pontypridd Library will host a talk on Monday, June 7, called ‘Around the World in 80 Schools’ by Charlene Evans, who began her own journey around the world at Coedylan School. There will be free Sri Lankan tea and biscuits from 10.30am before her talk. On Tuesday, June 8, from 10.30am, Pontypridd-based photographer Derek Lewis, who has just published a book, will give a talk.

Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Robert Bevan, said: “Interesting and informative events with a travel theme are being held at libraries across the county borough during the week, so I hope people of all ages will go along and enjoy a taste of other countries and cultures. This serves as another example of all that our libraries have to offer.”
