Friendships Formed Through City Park

A group of volunteers have come together to support one of Cardiff’s most prestigious parks.

The Friends of Roath Park have formed to assist and partner Cardiff Council in the management of what is regarded as the jewel in the crown of Cardiff’s parks.

The group will aim to promote the park in order to attract a wider audience of visitors and volunteers will also assist in the maintenance in the botanic garden and Roath Park Conservatory as well as helping with events and raising funds

Parks Friends groups have been operating in Cardiff since 1989 and have been active in supporting the council in all aspects of park management.

Constituted groups are in place across the city linked to traditional parks, heritage sites, conservation areas and cemeteries.

Many of the groups have been successful in securing grants and external funding enabling improvements

The groups also participate in a Cardiff Friends Forum that meet up to three times a year to exchange ideas and information and share best practises.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “I am delighted to welcome a new group to the family of Friends Groups we have operating here in Cardiff.

“We are fortunate to have teams of volunteers who give up their time to assist the Council in managing the parks and their hard work and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated”.

Chairperson of the Friends of Roath Park, David Hughes said: “This is an exciting opportunity for anyone young or old to join the group. We hope to work with Council to maintain this much loved area as the best in the city but also to appeal to a wider audience throughout Britain”.

Roath Park is one of the city’s busiest parks receiving more than two million individual visits per yours.  The park also holds the prestigious Green Flag Award which has been awarded for eight consecutive years.
