A Coleg Gwent student who represented Wales in the semi-finals of the Cycle Speedway World Championships in Australia is now working hard towards the next world tournament, as well as building up his career in construction.
Josh Davis, 18 from Newport, beat competitors from countries around the world to become a finalist in the Cycle Speedway Championships in Adelaide, Australia during October 2013, and is now looking towards his two new future goals.
The multi skills construction student from Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus took part in five races during the competition, and scooped two trophies as a finalist in the International Cycle Speedway Federation 2013 Junior Under 18 World Best Pairs and World Cup Four Nations Junior World Cup.
“I’m really proud and excited to have competed for my country,” said Josh, who got into the sport aged four and is a member of a Newport cycle speedway club. “It was a fantastic experience and made all the hard work and commitment worth it. My Dad is also involved in the sport and has competed for Wales, so it was a big moment for my family too!”
Looking to the future, Josh is already training for the next world tournament in Poland in two years’ time.
Josh is also well on the way to achieving his goal of a career in tiling, and he has worked hard to balance his college work with his cycling achievements. He said: “My college tutors have been very supportive and understanding, and have made it easier for me to fit my studying around my competitions. It’s made such a difference knowing that I had the right support behind me to compete in cycling but also to train for my future career.”
His Coleg Gwent tutor Christopher Lewis, said: “We couldn’t be happier about Josh’s success. It’s no easy feat to study at college and compete at the highest level representing your country. Josh is an inspiration to his fellow Coleg Gwent students and we’re all very proud of him.”
