Funding Boost Announced for Cardiff Community Buildings

Cardiff Council has announced12 voluntary sector community groups who will receive funding to enhance their community buildings.  

The Community Building Grants, worth up to £5,000 have been awarded following an application process by which groups were required to demonstrate how their grant would be used to benefit the local community.

Projects fall under one of seven categories including improvement of the building structure, upgrading of safety provisions, improving accessibility into and within the building and the installation of energy efficient measures.

The Gabalfa Draconians Football Club have been successful and intend to make enhancements to the club changing rooms, allowing them to offer the facility to a greater number of users within the community.

Roath Church House have also secured funding and are planning to install a stair lift to make the buildings upstairs meeting rooms accessible to everyone.

Other successful projects to receive the funding this year are; Old St Mellons Village Hall, Sanatan Dharma Mandal Community Centre, The Polish Home Association, Rumney Memorial Hall, Adamsdown Community Project, Sbectrwm Centre Fairwater, Dar Ul Isra, Pentyrch Village Hall, Media Academy Cardiff and St Andrew’s Methodist Church.

Executive Member for Housing, Communities and Social Justice, Cllr Judith Woodman, said: “This scheme is a great way for local groups to improve not only their building but the services they offer their community.

“The grants are vital so that improvements can be made which in turn will make them more attractive and more accessible to everyone in the community.”

Paul Yanez of Cardiff Draconians FC said: “We are very pleased to have received this grant and it will be a great help towards refurbishing our changing rooms.

“It means we can maintain our status in the South Wales Amateur Football League and meet the criteria and level of high standards required.

“We have had great support and assistance from the council and we couldn’t be happier.”
