Geology students scoop top prize

A Level Geology students from Gower College Swansea have won the Southern Wales round of the Schools Geology Challenge, a recent competition organised by the Geological Society of London and held at Coleg Sir Gar.

The college team, captained by Rhiannon Holden and including Dan Bennett, Sara Jane Evans, Henry Robinson and Llŷr Wegner, developed a brochure on the theme of the ‘Most Inspiring Geological Location in the UK,’ using Rhossili and Worm’s Head as their inspiration.

“On the night, the team did extremely well both in the presentation and quiz rounds and their brochure was extremely professional,” says lecturer Chris Walley. “There was very tough opposition from Cowbridge Comprehensive, Coleg Sir Gar and Whitchurch High School, so their success is a great achievement.”

Prizes included a crystal Schools Geology Challenge trophy, a year’s free membership of the Geological Society as a Junior Candidate Fellow for each student, an invitation to attend President’s Day at Burlington House, London in June and a prize book for the college library.

The team will now receive funding from the Geological Society to proceed as the Welsh representatives in the first National Schools Geology competition. This is set to take place at the prestigious headquarters of the Geological Society of London on 25 April.
