George: Ladywell House Closure Concern

Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, has called on the Welsh Government to make a decision as soon as possible regarding its review of its offices in Wales.

The Assembly Member asked Business Minister, Jane Hutt AM, to bring forward an urgent statement regarding the future of its office in Newtown before the National Assembly broke for summer recess.

Commenting Mr George said:

“There is increasing uncertainty for government employees who work in Newtown concerned about their futures. But there is also growing concern from local businesses and retailers who rely on the income streams generated from the Welsh Government being based at Ladywell House.

“It would be disastrous economically for Newtown if the Government decides to move its office from the town. The last thing we need is another empty building.

“It would also be a huge set-back for Welsh democracy and governance. People already feel that the Welsh Government is dis-interested in Mid Wales. The perception of a ‘Cardiff bubble’ is often all too apparent in regions away from the capital.

“While Government Ministers are reluctant to make a decision before recess, I hope they reconsider and allow the whole Assembly the chance to debate this crucial issue in detail.”
