George & Sandbach: Energy Vision ‘ignores critical technology’

Welsh Conservatives have questioned the absence of any reference to anaerobic digestion (AD) in the First Minister’s ‘Energy Vision’.

The process is a vitally important technology that both reduces organic waste, while also acting as a renewable energy source.

Shadow Minister for Environment Russell George AM said:

“The first minister’s energy vision lacked detail and clarity in a number of areas, particularly that of anaerobic digestion. This is a crucial technology that has a number of essential benefits to renewable energy.

“While I welcome talk of an ‘energy decade’ in Wales, it is difficult to have faith in the published plans when they contain such glaring omissions. If this really is the start of a bright future for renewable energy, how can it ignore such a critical technology?

“I urge the first minister and his environment spokesman to provide a statement on how they intend to utilise AD and what benefits they expect to gain.”

Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs Antoinette Sandbach AM said:

“AD is especially important to the farming community and its omission in this document speaks volumes on the Welsh Government’s approach to rural affairs.

“This is a technology that has great potential for farmers across Wales.

“Welsh Conservatives have long called for better support for on-farm bio-digestors and the complete ignorance of the issue in this ‘vision’ beggars belief.”
