Get FIT this New Year with Sport Flintshire’s FIT Camp

To help you get fit in the New Year, Sport Flintshire is offering free trial FIT Camp sessions.

There are trial sessions on offer on Tuesday 15 and Thursday 17 January at Deeside Leisure Centre, with the next FIT Camp course starting from Tuesday 22 January.

FIT Camp stands for Functional Intensity Training with all sessions incorporating exercises that work within the body’s natural functional movement patterns.

The Camp takes place early mornings indoors in the unique environment of the Extreme Zone at Deeside Leisure Centre, enabling access to areas like the bouldering wall, crash mat area and under the Skytrail. During sessions you will use equipment such as kettlebells, battle ropes, tyres, TRX, resistance bands, medicine balls and power bags, to name a few, keeping every workout unique and very different to your everyday workouts.

Councillor Peter Macfarlane, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Enterprise and Leisure, said:

“FIT Camp is a concept put together by expert fitness instructors Craige Bowles, who has over 17 years as a fitness professional, and Jamie Cross, who has a Masters in Sport Science. FIT Camp sessions are from 7am to 8am Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the aim to allow those who work, have children or other commitments the opportunity to exercise before the start of the working day.”

Sport Flintshire ran its first very successful FIT Camp course recently, for those wanting to improve their health, workout and lose weight. The first group attended two workouts per week for five weeks with a weekend workout/challenge to complete at home as well.

Participants had an initial assessment at the start of the course, measuring weight, body fat percentage, hydration, metabolic rate and muscle mass and were given recommendations and targets to work towards. During the course, participants had personal food diary analysis, nutritional advice and a final assessment.

Craige Bowles said:

“The group’s final assessments showed that collectively they had lost over 9.5% body fat and gained over one and a half stone in muscle mass. These are some amazing results from only five weeks of a lifestyle change. Jamie and I have been very impressed with the commitment and progress shown by all the team, and most have already booked in for the next course.”

Feedback from the first group includes:

“Loved both sessions this week… Battle ropes, power bags, gloves and pads were great. The use of the crash mat is very good and has a big impact on work rate.”

“I really enjoyed this week’s sessions. You catered for my ability and appreciated your help on Thursday with my sore knee and giving me alternative exercises to do. Also enjoyed the fact that there were different exercises to do on both sessions.”
