Get prepared for your Royal Wedding Street Party

Swansea Council has today urged residents to start planning now if they want to close their street to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Residents have until March 18 to formally apply for a road closure and they will need to inform their local police station and hire signs in advance of their event too.

So far no-one has taken up the chance to close their street for a community event to celebrate the Royals’ big day. But Carl Humphrey, Head of Highways, said there’s still time.

He said: “Like all other local authority areas, people have to apply to us to temporarily close a road for a street party or other community event. In Swansea it’s free to apply. But I’d urge anyone to get their application in as soon as possible.

“We can also help by loaning or renting-out relevant signposting. But they’d be provided on a first-come first-serve basis.”

When deciding on an application the Council’s highways team checks to ensure the road is suitable for the event and whether the applicant has adequate insurance.

The Council will also consult with police and other external bodies to ensure they have no objections. At the same time as applying, residents also need to contact their local police station for assistance with the physical closure of the road.

Once approved the Council will confirm to the applicant that the closure can go ahead in principal.

But to close the road on the day of the party residents also have to have signs and cones to prevent vehicles from entering.

The layout of the closure will also need to adhere to guidelines set out in legislation.

Application forms are available online at http://www.swansea.gov.uk/media/word/6/b/Traffic_Regulation_order.doc

If the street party includes the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment such as music and dancing, or late night refreshment namely sales of hot food and drink between 11pm and 5am, organisers  will need to get in touch with the council’s licensing team to find out whether a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) is needed.
