Gillan: Almost one in four toddlers live in benefit dependent households

Responding to official Government figures which show that almost one in four toddlers in Wales are growing up in a household dependent on out-of-work benefits, Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan MP said:

“This is yet more evidence of Labour’s failure to tackle worklessness and welfare dependency in Wales.

“These figures show that even before families started to feel the full impact of the recession, far too many parents were stuck in benefit dependency.

“Wales has one of the highest proportions of children growing up in workless households in all of the UK.

“We desperately need to turn this situation around. The only solution is the kind of radical welfare reform that Conservatives have been calling for.”
