Gillan: Gordon Brown continues to ignore Wales

Commenting on tonight’s launch of Labour’s election campaign in Wales, Shadow Welsh Secretary Cheryl Gillan said:

“The Prime Minister called the election a week ago and he’s still not visited Wales.

“When Peter Hain talked about Wales being the great ignored nation, he was clearly referring to Gordon Brown.

“Wales is nothing more than an afterthought to Gordon Brown.

“The Prime Minister has barely visited Wales since he took office – and since Conservatives beat Labour in Wales at last year’s European elections we’re surprised he wants to come at all.

“For Labour Wales is a country to compare with Rwanda, where dire economic figures ‘aren’t that bad’, and where qualifying for the highest level of EU aid is ‘not a matter of shame’.

“13 years of Labour has left the Welsh economy in ruins, 96,000 children in severe poverty, high unemployment, and a widening wealth gap.

“Labour’s campaign launch tonight is a timely reminder to the people of Wales why we can’t afford another five years of Gordon Brown.”
