Gillan: Hain at odds with Home Secretary over police numbers

Welsh Conservatives last night accused Peter Hain of being at odds with the Home Secretary over police numbers.

During tonight’s ITV Wales leaders’ debate in Cardiff the Welsh Secretary claimed Labour is protecting policing numbers.

But when challenged to give a yes or no answer to the question ‘Can you guarantee if you form the next government that police numbers won’t fall?’, Alan Johnson answered ‘No.’

Commenting on Mr Hain’s apparent ignorance of the Home Secretary’s comments, Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan said:

“Peter Hain says Labour will guarantee police numbers. Alan Johnson says they cannot.

“He is embarrassingly at odds with the Home Secretary and tried to mislead the public about Labour’s plans for law and order, if the nightmare scenario of five more years of Gordon Brown comes to pass.

“Peter Hain – the man who recently compared Wales with Rwanda – is either clueless or is trying to deceive people. Or both.”
