Glamorgan Slump as Worcs Claim First Win

Clydesdale Bank 40 League, New Road: Worcestershire 296-5 beat Glamorgan 118 by 178-runs

Glamorgan were fired out for just 118 at New Road as they slumped to a 178-run defeat in the Clydesdale Bank 40 League.
The Welsh county – out of contention to qualify from Group A – became Worcestershire’s first success in this year’s competition as they enjoyed a miserable afternoon with bat and ball.

Having won the toss, the hosts built themselves an excellent platform with an opening stand of 105. Moeen Ali and Alexei Kervezee – two players enjoying fruitful seasons – then shared 106 in just 11 overs, Ali going on to make 121 from 105 balls.

It was toil for the Glamorgan attack. It took a brief three over spell from Nick James – playing his first match this season – to provide a breakthrough. He took two in two balls but there was no control for the visitors. Will Owen’s 8-0-45-0 being the pick of the attack.

296-5 was not an unsurmountable total on a good pitch but the reply never got going. Matt Mason had Will Bragg – back opening the batting after a season in the finishing role – Mark Cosgrove and David Brown – also a promotion at number three – caught behind the wicket. Wickets continued to tumble and Mark Wallace’s 29 from 31 balls was only a face-saving innings.

But Glamorgan were left embarrassed as Shakib Al Hasan took four-for-32 and the innings ended in just the 26th over.
