Glyn Davies MP Urges Local Schools to Support Parliament Week 2013

Glyn Davies MPGlyn Davies, Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire, is calling for local schools to take part in Parliament Week, an annual programme of events to inspire people across the UK to participate in democratic life.

Parliament Week 2013 begins  on 15th November and will see organisations and schools around the country join in a week long programme of activities and events– all designed to inform, inspire and connect people all over the UK with parliamentary democracy.

Part of this year’s programme will focus on Women in Democracy – celebrating women’s contribution to UK democratic life and exploring how women’s voices can be better heard. Parliament Week is looking for organisations and schools around the UK to join its existing 130 partners already taking part in this exciting week.

Founded in 2011, Parliament Week 2013 takes place between 15th and 21st of November and is an annual series of events and activities, co-ordinated by the House of Commons with support from the House of Lords. It aims to raise awareness of Parliament and encourage people to engage with the UK’s democratic system and its institutions. A number of organisations, such as the UK Youth Parliament and the Hansard Society, are joining with Parliament Week to host events about democracy and political engagement.

Schools are also invited to take part in Parliament Week through specially created resources such as debate packs and assembly plans. For more information visit www.parliamentweek.org/schools/.

Speaking about Parliament Week 2013, Glyn Davies MP said:

“Parliament Week allows schools and pupils from across Montgomeryshire to take part in a nation-wide initiative that helps them connect with, and become better informed about, their Parliament.

“The Week also offers an opportunity to highlight the work and history of the Houses of Parliament and to discuss Parliament’s relevance with students, and I have written to every school in Montgomeryshire to encourage them participate.

“There are also many ways which people and organisations from across Montgomeryshire can get involved – put on an event such as a debate, exhibition, or lecture or visit the Parliament Week website for more ideas. Become a Parliament Week partner and, along with over 130 other organisations, add your voice to this exciting project.”
