Glyn Davies, Conservative MP for Montgomeryshire, has written to the manager of Machynlleth Railway Station to congratulate him on being recognised by the Department for Transport under the ‘Secure Stations Scheme’. The scheme, which is run by the Department for Transport and the British Transport Police, recognises stations which effectively reduce crime, theft and antisocial behaviour, as well as generally making passengers feel safer and more secure.
As well as ensuring the design and management of the station conform to strict criteria the scheme also looks at annual crime figures and conducts a survey of passengers to see how safe they feel
Glyn Davies said “I am impressed that Machynlleth station has fulfilled the criteria to be included on the DfT’s ‘Secure Stations Scheme’. There are over 2,500 train stations is the UK and only about half of them are listed on the scheme. The scheme’s guidelines are stringent and it is clear that the management at Machynlleth station has worked hard and deserves this recognition.
“This recognition of the station shows that not only have managers and staff met the tough targets set by the DfT and BTP, but that passengers using the station have seen a real difference.
“I congratulate Machynlleth station and I hope other stations in Montgomeryshire will work towards this accreditation.”
